The museum is placed in the monumental center of Gernika, a reference city in the Basque Country, surrounded by the "Casa de Juntas", the Park of "Los Pueblos de Europa" (The Towns of Europe), "El Convento de Santa Clara"(St Clare Convent), the local Archive, or the Gothic "Santa María" (St. Mary) Church. And the Museum includes what at one time was "Montefuerte" Palace or the "Alegría" (Joy) Palace, a baroque building built in 1733 on a former tower, with a beautiful romantic garden in the back yard.

The Museum explains, in a summarized way, the so far known origins of the Basque Country, its environment and archeology, its culture and its development by means of the language, the social and religious evolution, etnography, industry and comerce in a period of 150.000 years. The Institutions of the Basque Country, from the first documents of the Middle Ages to the 19th century. All this is shown with pictures, engravings, oil paintings, mock-ups, an excelent cartography and nautical instruments from the 16Ith to the 19th century, within a frame of a restored and strong building with some notable references, such as its sight-seeing roof´s structure..., and the always excelent attention of its managing director, co-author as well of the Architecture Guide you can see in this web site.
